Building scientific capacity for the next generation of ocean and environmental scientists
Education and capacity building are central to IMARENS's mission. We develop scientific talent through hands-on training programs, summer schools, workshops, and mentorship for early career researchers across Nigeria and West Africa.
Our training programs cover laboratory techniques, field sampling methods, oceanographic instrumentation, data analysis, and scientific communication — equipping participants with the skills needed to address marine and environmental challenges.
Programs
IMARENS scientists lead training at the Coastal Ocean Environment Summer School in Nigeria and Ghana (COESSING), providing early career researchers with intensive laboratory and field experience in coastal ocean science.
Hands-on training in marine biogeochemistry, stable isotope analysis, lipid biomarkers, nutrient dynamics, and sediment biogeochemistry for graduate students and researchers.
At-sea training aboard research vessels, including oceanographic sampling with CTD rosettes, water column profiling, and sediment coring techniques.
Public outreach training through radio programs, media engagement, and community education on the state of our seas and environmental stewardship.
IMARENS researchers participate in and contribute to international training programs, including the UN One Ocean Expedition aboard Statsraad Lehmkuhl — a sailing vessel that serves as a floating university for ocean science, supported by ESA and NASA.
These experiences connect Nigerian scientists with global observation networks and provide unique at-sea research training opportunities.
